Our History

‘Lawrence Poole Excavations’ started in 1987 soon after completing his YTS on a local farm with an ageing Case 580F wheeled digger. Once he worked out how to operate the machine, he soon started picking up contracts in the area. After a few years, Lawrence changed his trading name to Aardvark to get to the front of the Yellow Pages. He then purchased his second machine, a Poclain 60 excavator and employed his first driver Adrian.

In the early 90’s Lawrence found himself in a difficult position; The firm he had both his machines on hire to at Crediton sewage treatment works went into administration. This unfortunate situation was his first big break into the contracting world, he was awarded the remaining groundworks package from Tilbury Douglas. This set the path of Aardvark for the years ahead, many successful contracts were completed.

Lawrence was very keen to establish the heavy transport part of the business, and purchased its first low loader, a beautiful Scania 143. Over the years the dedication of his team has earned Aardvark an excellent reputation in the industry for a reliable reactive service with up-to-date equipment.

Later on in the years, Lawrence agreed with Jason White (his then-contract manager) to split off the contracting part of the company to Aardvark Civil Engineering. Jason then led the contracting works very successfully. Lawrence concentrated on the heavy haulage and plant hire side of the business.

Lawrence was joined by his son Jacob in 2024, who previously ran a successful commercial sales company, and in turn, invested in Aardvark. The bond between the two created the tight-knit family-run business that it is today.
